Anthropic is making Auto mode the default for Claude Code Pro, Max, and Team users starting August 14.

Instead of stopping to ask for approval at every step, Claude Code will keep working unless an action is irreversible, destructive, or reaches outside the user’s environment.

Here’s the real story:

The old safety model assumed humans would carefully review every permission prompt.

Anthropic’s own testing found Auto mode caught far more harmful actions than human review, partly because users were approving nearly everything anyway.

Agentic AI is moving from supervised automation to selective supervision.
