Canva Just Built Its Own AI Image Model
Canva just decided it doesn’t want to rent its AI brain anymore.
The company launched Canva Craft, its first homegrown image-generation model. And honestly, the interesting part isn’t that Canva can now make pictures. We have approximately 47 billion tools that can make pictures.
The interesting part is that Craft is being built around actual design work.
Canva says it trained the model on millions of human-made designs, so it’s meant to be better at things image generators tend to fumble: layout, text, composition, object placement and making something that looks like it belongs in an actual project.
That makes it especially useful for the stuff people already use Canva for: social posts, ads, presentations, posters, product shots and marketing materials.
This is the smart part
Most AI image tools are basically: Here’s your picture. Good luck.
Canva’s pitch is closer to: Here’s your picture. Now let’s actually make something with it.
Craft lives inside Canva’s existing creative workflow, which means you can generate an image and keep editing it instead of bouncing between an AI image generator and your design software.
For someone making a social graphic at 11:47 p.m. while wondering why they agreed to do this themselves, that’s a pretty compelling difference.
But Canva is making a bigger bet
Canva isn’t really trying to become another Midjourney.
It wants to own the whole trip from “I have an idea” to “Cool, it’s finished.”
That’s a much bigger opportunity.
And building its own model gives Canva more control over speed, cost, quality and how deeply AI gets woven into the rest of the platform.
There’s a catch
Running your own AI model is expensive.
Canva has been relying heavily on outside AI models, and those costs add up when you have millions of people generating things. Building in-house could give Canva more control over those economics, but now the company gets to pay for the expensive AI infrastructure itself.
So there’s a pretty big bet hiding inside this release:
Canva thinks AI is going to be important enough to its future that outsourcing the intelligence no longer makes sense.
And I think that’s the part worth watching.
The killer feature here probably isn’t “Canva can generate an image.”
It’s “Canva can generate the thing you actually needed to finish your work.”
That’s a much more interesting AI product.
