Making AI Videos That Don’t Feel Like AI Videos

If you want your AI videos to hit, you’ve gotta think like a director, not just a prompt writer.
Start with the vibe. Is it a quiet morning shot in soft light? A chaotic street scene with handheld camera energy? Whatever it is, lead with that. The first part of the prompt matters most, so pack the good stuff up front.
Frame your subject like you mean it. Camera work matters. Scene and sound get locked in with visual details and audio cues.
Be concise avoid ambiguous phrasing. See the video prompt I used for the video in this article farther below.
Steal my prompt and adapt it for your own use!
Use the following elements in your video prompt. You don’t need to use all of them every time, but the more descriptive you are, the better the video.
▪️Composition (the framing of the scene, visual hierarchy)
▪️Subject (the person or people in the video)
▪️Character (identity, appearance, wardrobe)
▪️Setting (environment, architecture, era)
▪️Visual details (any special elements in the scene)
▪️Cinematography (camera angle, type of camera, instruction of portrayal)
▪️Audio (special sounds, music)
▪️Lighting (source, direction, quality)
▪️FX (stylizations, atmospheric)
▪️Color Grading ( color palette, mood)
▪️Style (art direction)
These are the basics and should at minimum be part of any AI video prompt.
It helps to use ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Grok to brainstorm elements the fill in the video prompt.
For example, for the video below, I used ChatGPT to brainstorm the elements that a Shinobi ninja would have in their trading dojo.
It’s also important to use iterative prompting, meaning use the AI to develop your video prompt through a series of questions and things to add to describe your video.
Video prompt:
Create a 5-second animated sequence featuring a mysterious Shinobi ninja practicing in a traditional Shinobi dojo. The dojo should have a minimalist design with wooden floors, tatami mats, and wooden walls, maintaining an open structure to allow for extensive movement and training activities. The ninja character, dressed in traditional attire with a hood, should be surrounded by swirling red energy trails that emanate from their body as they perform fluid, martial arts-inspired movements. The energy effects should pulse and flow, emphasizing their power and agility.
In the background, include traditional training weapons such as shuriken, kunai, and possibly a kyoketsu-shoge, mounted on the walls or placed around the dojo. Add scrolls and a few calligraphy banners with Japanese characters, reflecting themes of stealth, endurance, and martial prowess, hanging on the wooden walls. The overall color palette should be dominated by natural wood tones, with the glowing red energy providing a stark contrast. Subtle smoke effects at the base of the dojo can enhance the mystical atmosphere, while the open design of the dojo ensures the focus remains on the ninja's dynamic movements and the glowing energy trails.
