OpenAI just moved ChatGPT directly onto Microsoft Office’s turf.

At DevDay, OpenAI unveiled a collection of workplace features that increasingly makes ChatGPT look less like an AI assistant and more like the beginnings of an AI-native productivity suite.

And the interesting part is that OpenAI isn’t simply rebuilding Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Here’s the real story:

The centerpiece is ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where teams can collaborate with each other, ChatGPT, and OpenAI’s new autonomous Dots agents. Those agents can work on tasks alongside the team rather than waiting for every individual prompt.

ChatGPT’s broader work tools can already create and edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and analyses, including reusable templates. It can also work directly with supported Google Workspace files and Microsoft Office apps.

That creates an interesting new battle with Microsoft.

Microsoft’s strategy has largely been to bring AI into the productivity software people already use. OpenAI increasingly appears to be approaching the problem from the opposite direction: start with the AI and build the workplace around it.

And agents could make that distinction much more important.

Traditional office software gives people tools to do work. An AI-native workspace increasingly gives people agents that can do portions of the work for them.

Microsoft put AI inside the office suite. OpenAI is trying to build the office suite around AI.
