Its new adaptive reasoning feature lets it think longer for complex prompts and reply instantly to simple ones.

GPT-5.1 Thinking

Thinking mode has been rebuilt for clarity and precision. It varies its processing time based on difficulty, doubling speed for easy tasks and taking more time for complex ones. It’s also better at explaining technical concepts in plain English—clearer, less jargon-heavy, and more useful for creative and analytical work.

New Personalization Options

Tone control got a full redesign. You can now pick styles like Professional, Candid, or Quirky, plus tweak traits like warmth, brevity, and emoji use. ChatGPT can even adjust your tone automatically during conversations, keeping everything consistent across chats.

The new Auto mode chooses the best model for your query, so you don’t have to. Rollout starts this week, with GPT-5 models remaining for three months as legacy options.
