Google is killing Gemini Gems. But it isn’t killing what you built with them.

Instead, Google is turning those custom assistants into Skills, another sign that AI is moving away from collections of specialized chatbots and toward agents that can dynamically use capabilities when they need them.

Starting November 17, Gemini Gems will automatically migrate into Skills. Users don’t need to rebuild them, and existing Gems will continue working until the transition.

Here’s the real story:

Gems were essentially custom versions of Gemini. You could give one persistent instructions and turn it into a coding partner, editor, brainstorming assistant, travel planner, or something completely specific to your workflow.

Skills take that idea and make it more modular.

Instead of opening a separate custom AI every time you want Gemini to behave differently, those capabilities can be pulled into different AI tasks. Google says users will select them inside a task thread using a “/” command.

That sounds like a small product change, but it reflects something much bigger happening across AI.

The industry is moving from “pick the chatbot you want” toward “give an agent the skills it needs.”

The AI assistant is becoming the platform. Skills are becoming the apps.
