OpenAI’s First ChatGPT Device Has Leaked. It’s Far More Ambitious Than a Smart Speaker.

It’s a battery-powered, doughnut-shaped AI speaker about the size of a hockey puck, designed with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio and targeting a 2027 launch at roughly $300–$400.

No screen.

Instead: cameras, sensors, moving components, and a much more capable version of ChatGPT voice mode running the experience.

It’s trying to make ChatGPT physically present in your environment — listening, seeing, understanding context, and potentially helping before you ever think to pull out your phone.

That’s not really a smart speaker.

It’s an ambient AI computer disguised as one.

And there are three huge things to watch:

▪️ Privacy becomes the product. A device with cameras, microphones, facial recognition, and long-term context only works if people trust it enough to let it live in their homes.

▪️ This looks more like a shot at Apple than Amazon. OpenAI isn’t just competing for the smart-home market. It’s making a play for the computing interface that comes after the smartphone — while an Apple-related trade-secrets fight hangs over the project.

▪️ Facial recognition changes the stakes. If the device can identify individual users and eventually authorize things like purchases, this moves far beyond “ask ChatGPT a question.”

OpenAI isn’t trying to put ChatGPT in another device.

It’s trying to make ChatGPT the device.
