Based on recent reports, here’s the key AI-related announcements I’m anticipating at Google I/O today, where AI is expected to be a central focus. Things kick off at today’s keynote, 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.
Gemini AI Updates: Google is expected to unveil upgrades to Gemini, likely a new version of Gemini Ultra. Look for faster performance & tighter integration across Search, YouTube, and Workspace. A Gemini agent would be great, but unexpected.
AI Overviews and AI Mode: Expect improvements to Google AI search, including smarter Overviews and a more refined AI Mode for handling complex queries. Google needs to level up overviews, which have been plagued by errors.
Software Development AI Agent: A new lifecycle agent may debut, designed to help developers across the coding process—from writing to debugging. Or Google could make agents like Agentspace or Vertex public.
Creative AI Tools: Google could launch updates to Veo and Imagen 3, plus a design-focused inspiration feed—like Pinterest, but AI-native.
Project Astra: Google may showcase new progress on Astra, its multimodal AI agent that can see, hear, and respond in real time—building on last year’s demos.
